Active

Active components consist of SCRs (Silican-controlled rectifiers), TRIACs (Triode for Alternating Current) transistors, diodes and vacuum tubes.  Active components have the ability to electrically control electron flow (electricy controlling electricity).  All active devices control the flow of electrons, some of which allow a voltage to control this current, while others allow another current to complete the process.

Active components differ from Passive components as they are generally able to inject power into a circuit, although this is not always the case.  A battery is a perfect example of an Active component as it truly acts as a direct source of energy.
