Passive

Passive components are those that are incapable of controlling current by means of a separate electrical signal.  These include resistors, inductors, transformers, capacitors and transformers which are essential to building electronic hardware. Passive components are not capable of introducing net energy into the circuit that they are connected to, nor can they rely on a source of power unless it is available from the AC circuit they are directly connected to. This means that they are not able to amplify signal strength but may be able to increase a current or voltage.

A majority of components with more than two terminals may be commonly described as two port parameters, which satisfies the principle of reciprocity. There are a few rare exceptions to this rule, in which active components that have more than two terminals normally lack that composition.
